Deep within the captivating rolling fields, lived a boy named Shepherd. His existence was mostly untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was essentially to care for his herd of sheep.
Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the breezes across the solo tree on the hilltop were his constant companions. Day after day, guarding his charges instilled in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there here were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for company. On one such day because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous scheme.
Stories of wolves hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a trick on the villagers.
One morning he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but found nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This game persisted for a few days more. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once broken, is hard to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
